I think it's fair to say that there are similarities, although the way Germany got into its economic situations was quite different. In general, serious economic difficulties will breed racism, antisemitism, anti-clerical ideas, and street demonstrations. People do not like austerity that makes their lives worse, and they need to find someone to blame. If the avenue of blaming the government (or worse, their own actions) is cut off, minorities will bear the brunt.
