To the freemasons what is it that you learn inside the masonic order?

surely it is not entirely upon the fraternity basis. For then what does the levels or numbers in freemasonry stands for? eg. first degree mason, 2nd degree mason, third degree mason (or master mason) up until 33rd. What is it that you study and learn inside the lodge?
