Is it true that if you die from drowning you can not become a Saint?

I was watching a documentary on Rasputin and it said the people who killed him wanted everyone to believe he drowned because he wouldn't be able to be made a saint then. Is this true? Why? Is this just for Eastern Orthodox Catholics?
